●  Physical attack in Gdańsk

In Gdańsk, a 29-year-old Polish man named Jan was attacked in a railway tunnel in the Orunia district after a stranger assumed he was Ukrainian. Jan was walking with his girlfriend and two dogs when a cyclist riding towards them stopped and started a confrontation, asking whether the tunnel was "a dog-walking area". Jan replied that it was not a bike lane either, and the man then asked him: "Are you from Ukraine?" Jan, a Polish citizen living in Gdańsk, answered that even if he were Ukrainian it should not be a problem. The cyclist got off his bike and slapped him in the face, and punched him when Jan tried to hold him until the police arrived. A passer-by intervened, mistakenly taking Jan for the aggressor, and the attacker fled. Jan went to hospital, where doctors diagnosed contusions.

The next day Jan went to a police station to file a report. According to his account, an officer told him the incident did not qualify as a nationality-motivated hate crime because the victim was Polish, and the report was not accepted. After the publication of the article, the Gdańsk police commander ordered a review of the circumstances of the case.
