● Physical attack in Szczecin
On the evening of 28 January 2024, on Kazimierska street in Szczecin, unknown perpetrators threw a firecracker onto the balcony of a flat inhabited by a family with children from Vietnam. Nobody was hurt.
The attack was part of a series of racist incidents against the family that had been going on for months. A friend of the victims, city councillor Dominika Jackowski, told local media: "On the estate we heard a bang, then friends and neighbours called us. The family is from Vietnam, they have a different skin colour and this may attract attention." She said the attacks had lasted for months: "It all started with eggs being thrown at the balcony. Later, in December [2023], the father of the family was attacked outside a McDonald's restaurant, and this time the police were called. There is no doubt that the attackers [...] may be the same people."
The councillor expressed solidarity with the family: "This is a trauma for the whole family, in which the children fear for their own safety. We do not consent to such behaviour. I am ashamed of those who make life miserable for our neighbours. I thought we live in a tolerant and open city." Police confirmed they had received the information, but said no formal complaint had been filed by the victims, which was needed to open proceedings.
