Physical attack in Bydgoszcz

On 14 August 2026, in a park next to the railway station in Bydgoszcz, two Ukrainian children — a 14-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother — were attacked by an adult man and woman (walking a small dog) solely because they were speaking Ukrainian to each other.

The two adults first hurled obscene insults at the children and threatened them with violence on grounds of national intolerance. The confrontation then turned physical: they twisted one child's arm, broke the children's toy drone and threw the fragments at the boy, leaving him with scratches.

A police report was filed and officers are searching for the attackers, who have not been identified. The Consulate General of Ukraine in Gdańsk, which made the case public and is in constant contact with the children's mother, said the children's physical health is not at risk but that they suffered severe emotional stress.
