● Physical attack in Sosnowiec
On 16 July 2022 on Jagiellońska street in Sosnowiec, an unidentified woman attacked a Ukrainian citizen who was waiting at a bus stop with her three-year-old daughter. The attacker heard the woman speaking Ukrainian on the phone, then insulted her, calling her a "Ukrainian rag", saying "you live here at my expense" and telling her to "get lost to Ukraine" and "get lost from Poland".
The aggression escalated: paying no attention to the crying child, the attacker punched the mother several times in the head. When the victim shouted that she would call the police, the attacker fled. In a letter to the prosecutor's office the injured Ukrainian woman wrote: "I am still in shock [because of the beating], I fled the war so that my daughter and I could feel safe here. I do not feel safe even on the street next to my home."
The police searched for the perpetrator. The spokeswoman of the Sosnowiec police, sub-inspector Sonia Kepper, stated that there was "no doubt that this was a hate crime" and that the attacker assaulted the woman because she was Ukrainian. It was not made public whether the perpetrator was detained.
