Physical attack in Szczecin

On 24 August 2024, near a grocery shop on Pocztowa street in Szczecin, 42-year-old Tomasz A. attacked a family from Ukraine. He heard a father speaking Ukrainian with his small daughter and told him to "teach the child to speak Polish". When Tomasz A. heard in reply that the girl speaks Polish very well, he punched the man twice in the face. He also punched the man's wife in the face when she tried to push the attacker away from her husband. The police intervened.

The Szczecin-Prawobrzeże District Prosecutor's Office charged Tomasz A. with using violence against a married couple of Ukrainian nationality because of their national origin. He did not plead guilty and refused to give explanations. In January 2025 the indictment was sent to the Regional Court in Szczecin.

On 28 April 2025 the court delivered its verdict. Tomasz A., who did not appear for the reading, was sentenced to one year and two months of imprisonment. In the oral justification judge Grażyna Tucholska said: "The defendant himself started this row only because he did not like the fact that someone in Poland speaks a foreign language."
